Duties

• Ten print/latent print analysis; ensure monthly lab QA/QC checks are performed;
• lead operation and maintenance of local, regional, and NGI/FBI fingerprint databases;
• local expert regarding crime scene investigations and latent print examinations;
• lead in training law enforcement in crime scene management, photography, and fingerprint processing;
• speak to public orgs on evidence/forensic related topics;
• perform admin work including monthly stats, accreditation reports and other reports as necessary;
• under supervision of Laboratory Director, help coordinate intern activities and crime scene/fingerprint lab tours;
• maintain crime scene and latent print SOPs, including development of new SOPs;
• train Level I Examiners to competency; assist in selection/interviewing of Level I examiners;
• administer and oversee annual proficiency testing in crime scene and latent prints;
• meet accreditation standards and best scientific practices for crime scene and latent print disciplines;
• respond to and document major crime scenes;
• collect evidence following accepted forensic science principles;
• process deceased and living individuals for collection of evidence;
• use standard scientific methodology to perform specialized forensic examination of evidence for collection of additional trace evidence, including latent prints, biological and trace evidence;
• document findings from crime scenes and lab work in written reports;
• testify in court proceedings as expert witness;
• operate and maintain technical scientific equipment;
• assist with evidence property related functions such as inventory or property disposal; and,
• perform technical/admin reviews of casework and technical evaluations of testimony.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in forensic science or closely related field plus 1 year experience in an accredited crime laboratory or forensics service laboratory, or, Bachelor’s degree in forensic science or closely related field plus 4 years’ experience in an accredited crime laboratory or forensics services laboratory.
• Experience must include: responding to and documenting major crime scenes; documenting the location of and collecting evidence following accepted forensic science principles; processing deceased and living individuals for collection of evidence; in laboratory setting, using standard scientific methodology to perform specialized forensic examination of evidence for collection of additional trace evidence; documenting findings and observations from crime scenes and laboratory work in written reports in accordance with established protocols; testifying in court proceedings as an expert witness; operating and maintaining technical scientific equipment; assisting with evidence property related functions, including inventory or property disposal; and, performing technical/administrative reviews of casework and technical evaluations of testimony.
• Must possess valid South Dakota driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days from date of hire.
