JOB SUMMARY

The Cognition, Action, and Psychophysiology (CAP) Lab ( , PI: Dr. Kimberly Cuevas ) in the Department of Psychological Sciences, at the University of Connecticut, Waterbury Campus is seeking a full-time Research Assistant 1. The successful candidate will play an integral role in managing a NICHD-funded study investigating the development of neural oscillatory rhythms and self-regulatory processes across the first 4 postnatal years; Project BUBBLES (Babies: Understanding Brains and Baseline Longitudinal EEG Study). There will also be opportunities to assist with other lab-related research projects at UConn.

This position offers an opportunity to obtain training and hands-on experience with several research methodologies in a longitudinal project, including EEG, ECG, resting-state procedures, and cognitive assessments. Project BUBBLES is a multi-site study in collaboration with Dr. Martha Ann Bell (Virginia Tech) and Dr. Zhe Wang (Texas A&M). The Research Assistant 1 will work with infants, their parents, and a team of researchers (undergraduate/graduate students, postdocs, and faculty). There will also be opportunities to engage in other lab-related research projects and cross-site trainings.

The position is an excellent opportunity for highly motivated individuals preparing for a graduate career in Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Science, or a related field. The successful candidate will have opportunities to be involved in conference submissions and presentations as well as manuscript preparation. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruiting and maintaining contact with infants and their families.
  • Collecting and processing behavioral, EEG/ECG, and questionnaire data.
  • Assist with data management efforts.
  • Coordinating, training, and working with our team of undergraduate research assistants.
  • Participate in data collection on evenings and weekends, as necessary.
  • Engage in lab meetings.
  • Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, human development, or a related field.
  • Previous research experience in a developmental lab focused on infancy or early childhood OR at least 1 year of behavioral research data collection experience plus documented experience working with infants and young children.
  • Effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with a group.  
  • Track record of strong organizational skills, with attention to detail/conscientiousness.
  • A commitment to maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and diverse research lab environment.
  • Established ability to manage multiple tasks and exceptional time-management skills. 
  • Ability to resolve issues in a timely manner and ensure smooth data collection appointments. 
  • Experience with data entry, word processing, or related computer skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with behavioral data collection with infants and/or young children, ideally 6 months-4 years of age.
  • Experience working with infants, young children, and families.
  • Experience collecting or processing EEG or ECG data. 
  • Experience with an EEG preprocessing pipeline. 
  • Experience with REDCap (or similar project management) and Microsoft software, including SharePoint, Excel, etc. 
  • Experience with behavioral coding. 
  • Experience with participant recruitment initiatives, including social media advertising, strategy, outreach, and website management. 
  • Experience using statistical software such as SPSS or R. 
  • Ability to learn and troubleshoot software and basic scripting methods, such as R or MATLAB.
  • MS in psychology, human development, or a related field.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. 
  • Confirmed availability of transportation for travel between CAP Lab in Waterbury and recruitment events in surrounding areas.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

A two-year commitment is preferred. The desired start date would ideally be during June 2024. This is a full-time, grant-funded, 12-month position. This position is subject to annual renewal, contingent on satisfactory performance and budget funding. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the American Association of University Professors UConn Chapter (AAUP).
